Street Strut

It was a beautiful Saturday for the 1st Annual Viewmont Street Strut. Nessie and I went down to the corner to listen to one of the live bands playing songs from the 70′s and 80′s. That hooked us and we proceeded to enjoy the art exhibits, window-shopped, sampled the free food and I tasted the beer (Nessie didn’t get any, she’s too young) before heading back.

Wouldn’t you know that I’d forget my camera? I’ll make up for it in two weeks when we go to Oktoberfest. Until then, I’ll just show you what a gorgeous day it was.

A small group of Viewmont women business owners had a spark of an idea to organize an event for one store. But, the idea caught on and turned into a community-wide celebration when more than 80 of the businesses in Viewmont expressed an interest in participating.

In addition to the local artists, entertainment, food and beer, were sidewalk sales, face painting, games, prizes, an antique car show and tons of business promotions. You have to be in awe of the organizational skills and hard work of the women who pulled everything together in a little over one month’s time. Great job, ladies! I am already looking forward to next year!

The Golden Lady

I promised photos from my trip to Madison. So, we’re going to start with the state capitol building. I took these from the roof of the building where my son works.

The Wisconsin State Capitol is home to both chambers of the Wisconsin legislature, the Office of the Governor and the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Standing 284 feet, 5 inches from the ground floor to the top of the statue, it is the tallest building in Madison.

The statue on top of the dome is called “Wisconsin”. It was sculpted in 1920 by Daniel Chester French of New York and is made of hollow bronze covered with gold leaf. “Wisconsin” wears a helmet with a badger (state animal) on top. Her left hand holds an eagle on a globe and her right arm is outstretched, symbolizing the state motto, “Forward.”

Church Window

While driving to an appointment last week, I passed by Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and the stained glass window caught my eye. I didn’t have time to get out and take pictures, so, I pulled over to the curb and just snapped one quick photo. I’ll have to go back earlier in the day to catch all of the colors of the stained glass – and the detail on the steeple.

Happy Halloween – Dilapidated

I first noticed this building while waiting my turn at a stoplight (one of the many on Hwy 127) the other day. Fortunately, my “go everywhere” camera (a Canon A-40) was in the van. The lighting was too good to pass up and I thought it would be perfect for a Halloween shot. Besides, after my earlier rant, I figured I owed you a nicer subject.
